This week my husband and I are completely redoing our bedroom! Ripping out the carpet, scraping off the popcorn ceiling, fixing up the walls, painting, new flooring, new trim, the whole shebang.
And as such, I’ve been busy with things that are not writing or art or anything cloudy. So today, I wanted to share a haiku I wrote as a freshman in high school for my English class:
Fish out of water
Helplessly flopping around
Tries to go back in
This haiku has been burned into my brain ever since. And since that day, I’ve always loved writing poetry. But I never pursued it back then, even for fun, because I thought I’d never make a career out of it so why bother.
Which is incredibly sad but today I’m choosing to look at it as something happy. Back then I didn’t know enough to understand that hobbies for the sake of hobbies are a good thing. Not everything needs to lead to a job or money.
But today, as I sit on our mattress on the floor in our make-shift living room/bedroom, I am actually prioritizing my hobbies over more and more in my life.
Don’t get me wrong, work still comes pretty high on the list and there are days where it comes first. But work doesn’t come first every day and that’s a huge step for me.
Some days, my hobbies come first. And while today sanding the walls of our bedroom had to come first, I’m still making time for this joy in my life, too.
I hope you’re having a lovely week! 💙
